Victory Gardens for Today

The Lucas County Master Gardener Speakers Bureau is proud to announce the 2009 Lecture Series focusing on Victory Gardens. This series will cover a wide variety of topics for planning your vegetable gardens this spring.  Learn how your family can improve nutrition, enjoy fresh produce, and save money at the supermarket. Victory Gardens, also called war gardens, or food gardens for defense, were vegetable, fruit and herb gardens planted at private residences in the United States, Canada, the United kingdom and Australia during World Wars I & II, to reduce the pressure on the public food supply brought on by the war effort.  In addition to indirectly aiding the war effort, these gardens were also considered a civil morale booster  in that gardeners could feel empowered by the contribution of labor and rewarded by the produce grown.  Making victory gardens became a part of daily life on the home front.
